- SWOOP for SharePoint will detect if a page, or file, has been opened independent of where it was done. A page or file could be opened on any browser or within Teams (e.g. Viva Connections) or on a mobile app (e.g. ioS SharePoint app).
- The Device Activity report will tell if a SharePoint page, or file, was opened on desktop, mobile or tablet device. We can tell if Teams was used, but only if it's via the desktop app. If they use Teams in a browser, then it will be recorded as a browser and not Teams.
Sometimes the numbers you see in SWOOP will differ from what you might see in SharePoint.
Both SWOOP and SharePoint process raw data to generate analytics, but we process the raw data in different ways. For instance, SharePoint will summarise data based on UTC time whereas SWOOP will respect the local time of the user. Below we outline currently known causes for differences in the numbers:
Areas of difference | SWOOP | SharePoint |
Views and visits by guest and anonymous users | Not included in SWOOP which only does people with a recognised M365 account. | Guests’ and anonymous users’ views and visits are included for sites created after March 2019. |
Timezone | Always respect the user's local time. |
Usage data is aggregated and displayed based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The exception is 'Traffic by time' which is in the user's local time.
|
Page refresh | Is counted as a new view. | Are excluded from the counting of a view. |
Page sent via email |
SWOOP cannot track news pages sent as an entire email. |
For a news post sent as email, page viewers, views, and traffic contain data from email. Reading time is not recorded for email views. |
Proxy firewall or ad blocker | If our SharePoint usage tracker is blocked by a firewall or an ad blocker SWOOP cannot record a view. | SharePoint is not affected by firewalls or ad blockers. |
File views | File views are currently excluded, but will be included in a subsequent release. | File views are excluded. |
