Segment Activity: What and How (SWOOP for Viva Engage)

What is Segment Activity?

This Segment Activity report in SWOOP for Viva Engage, by default, identifies activities by segments and is configurable to any profile attribute provided to SWOOP. This could include department, division, function, geographic location, staff level, job roles etc. Using the default attribute, you can determine the break- up of participation by formal business unit. Given that Viva Engage is installed to encourage cross-enterprise collaboration, those segments found to be not participating should be a target for coaching and encouragement to participate more broadly.

The Segment Activity report only shows segments that have been active in the time period. Any segments that have no activity (posting, replying, reacting, mentioning, etc.) in the time period will be excluded from the Segment Activity report.

Chat explained

The chart lists the organisational segments being analysed (e.g., Australia, United Kingdom, Singapore etc). In the example the segment represents a country, but the segment can be any attribute that has been added to SWOOP. Examples of attributes could be department, location, job title etc.

Segment Activity

The segment activity columns summarises engagement metrics for each segment:

  • TOTAL: The cumulative number of interactions (posts, replies, reactions, mentions, etc.) for that department.
Example: Australia has 9100 activities which is the highest number
  • TREND: A small line graph showing activity changes over time (e.g., increasing, stable, or declining).
  • LAST: The most recent date when activity was recorded for that segment.
Example: Malaysia was last active on 06 January 2023.

The segment users columns focus on user participation:

  • # USERS: The number of individuals who have, or had, an account on Viva Engage during the date-range selected, and who has been assigned the selected segment attribute.
Example: Australia has 27 users and United Kingdom has 2 users.
  • % ACTIVE USERS: The proportion of those users who have been active during the date-range selected.
Example: Australia shows 78%, meaning all 21 of the 27 users were active; United Kingdom shows 100% meaning that all of the 2 users were active.
How to use the Segment Activity report

During the early adoption phases, it is important to generate a critical mass of users. It is also important to demonstrate the enterprise nature of its usage. Community managers need to focus their attention on at least getting the broadest audience possible to experience the platform. Segment Activity provides a quick snapshot of the current status. The danger of allowing activity to polarise around a handful of segments is that the platform itself can define a new silo - those that use it and those that don’t. This will limit the potential of the platform going forward.
