What is the Influential People report?
An important characteristic of Viva Engage networks is some individuals are more important to the performance of the network than others. Networks that have just a few key influencers are at risk if one or more were to leave the network. The Influential People report in SWOOP for Viva Engage shows a list of the top 10 users who have engaged with the highest number of people. For those with additional SWOOP admin permissions, you will also have the ability to show your top 20, 30, 40 etc top influencers.
You will find the Influential People report on all the dashboards in the Engagement Tab (apart from Personal). On the Enterprise dashboard, it identifies influential people across your whole network, and on the community, segment, topic and thread dashboard, it identifies the influential people for the entities you have chosen.
So, how do you find out if your community is susceptible to influencer risk?
The ‘Influencer Risk Score’ at the bottom of the Influential People report looks at the degree of drop off from the most influential member and those lower down on the list. The Influencer Risk Score reflects the % drop-off. The lower the risk, the better.
Report calculations
People Engaged = The total number of unique relationships formed by the individual by counting all interactions (i.e. the total number of people the user has replied to, AND the total number of people that have replied/ reacted to a post/ reply made by the user).
Followers = The number of followers for an individual, but only if the followers have an active Viva Engage account (i.e. not deleted or disabled) within the selected date range.
Influencer Risk Score = Calculated by the People Engaged of the 3rd ranked individual/ the People Engaged of the 1st ranked individual. It's a comparison between the 3rd and 1st ranked individuals to calculate how great the risk is.
If the list of people has less than 6 users, then it will show 'Insufficient data to calculate the Influencer Risk Score.'
How to use the Influential People report
You can refer to the Influential People report to find who your Viva Engage collaboration champions are. Amongst the names of your influential people, it's ideal if you can see a mix of the following:
- Leaders across the business
- Employees across a diverse range of business segments. Eg) Not having one single department or location dominate the list
- Starting to see internal communicators dropping off the list. You may see community managers and comms staff appearing in this list by default. The more you drop back however, means your network is starting to sustain itself
What we have ascertained from our online networking studies is that online communities are much more susceptible to key player risk than off-line communities/networks. This may potentially be attributed to an existing ‘digital divide’, whereby only a proportion of community members choose to be active online.
If your community/network has a high influencer risk score, it is important to address this by encouraging more members to act as hubs in the network, by actively connecting others. If you notice
that selected individuals are doing all the ‘work’ in keeping the community active and vibrant, start trying to lend a hand. If you are one of the ‘selected few’ key players, try and encourage others to join you and become more active in connecting others. Try to delegate community activities to get others more involved. Perhaps ask others to host online events or initiatives as a way of broadening the community leadership responsibilities and increasing the visibility of others.
